Pet Project a Business Winner
The Star 27th September 2005
By Christine De Kock

While some pet owners think throwing a soup bone to their dog is a treat, others have a different concept of how to spoil their pooch.
Doggy Dooz owner Natalie West said pet owners from as far as Mildura and Fitzroy visited her studio in Seddon to groom and accessorize their pets.
“They have their nails done, pads checked, a hydro bath to get them clean or a flea rinse, get turbo dried and have a clip and style” she said.
But Doggy Dooz’s specialty is its ability to turn pets into fashion accessories.
“We do Mohawks, paint their nails, dress dogs for weddings in tuxedoes” Ms West said.
The studio also has a range of superhero outfits including Batman and superman costumes in various sizes.
The ingenuity of the accessories does not stop at dress-ups for dogs.
Ms West said practical accessories were also available.
“We have canine carriers (a trolley with wheels) you attach it to the back of the bike and take your dog to a picnic or for a walk” Ms West said.
She said pet owners usually used the contraption when their dogs were too old to go for a walk.
Doggy Dooz gained recognition for its ingenuity last year when it won the Greater Western Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (GWCCI) Service B award.
This years award night with Powercor and the Star among the sponsors, will be held on 19th October at Skyline room, Flemington Racecourse.
Tickets for the awards are available online and range from $75 for GWCCI members to $100 for non GWCCI members (excluding GST)

Prices include drinks, expo, dinner and entertainment.

Doggy Dooz Salon

The high costs of dog grooming and the growing trend for Do-It-Yourself means that many people are choosing to groom their dogs at home. While this can save time and money, but if not done properly, it can cause stress and even injury to our furry friends.
Nat West, Owner of Doggy Dooz salon and professional dog groomer with 13 years experience says  that common injuries include ‘burns and scrapes to the skin, particularly around the under arms, as well as cuts to the paws and face’.
“grooming is not difficult’ says Nat, ‘Once you know how to do it”.
The Doggy Dooz DIY Dog Grooming DVD teaches viewers how to safely and professionally groom their dogs. Nat shares the skills she has learnt, during her 13 years experience as a dog-groomer, with others. Nat provides one-on-one dog grooming tuition to dog owners and also teaches Professional Dog grooming at Chisholm Institute.
Choose the correct blade (using the wrong blade can cause cuts and tears). Brush your dog before you wash them and always use round-edged scissors around your dog’s eyes. Also, rinse all the shampoo off the dog after a bath.
Nat has operated her dog grooming salon, Doggy Dooz in Seddon for the past four years and, in this time, has developed loyal following.
The salon provides the very best dog grooming services and the boutique store stocks a range of products for the perfectly pampered pets. The shop is filled with the latest accessories, high quality pet food, the latest doggy fashions and pet health products.
Doggy Dooz has been highly recommended in the last three Australian Achiever Awards, was awarded the Best Service Award by Greater Western Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2004 and was short listed for the same award in 2005.
The Doggy Dooz ‘Do It Yourself’ Dog Grooming DVD is available Australia wide and from visiting www.doggydooz.com.au. It is priced at $49.95.

Cut Loose On Dogs A Bit Down at Heel

A Melbourne dog groomer is giving backyard owners tips on do-it-yourself buffing and fluffing for pooches.
Natalie West, owner of Seddon dog grooming salon and retail store Doggy Dooz, has launched the Australian first dog grooming DVD.
She said the tutorial was aimed at backyard pooches rather than show dogs.
“It’s nice to be able to give out a product that encourages people to take a little more care of their dogs” West said.
“It can cost 50 - $60 a time for professional grooming and you have to do that about 6 times a year, so it’s very expensive”.
“We get dogs coming in with big circles out of their coats, or injuries from scissors or the wrong technique and it’s nice to be able to give people a guide to do their own dogs”.
West takes owners step by step through the correct grooming techniques for Maltese-Shih Tzu cross, Miniature Poodle, Bichon Frise, West Highland Terrier, Shih Tzu and Miniature Schnauzer breeds.
“We take people through nail clipping, rough clip and there is a whole series on brushing, combing and bathing and drying”. West said.
The project took a year from conception to filming.
West, who has 13 years experience in the grooming industry, will release a book compatible with the DVD in August.
She also has plans to open a dog grooming school following the release of the book.
The Doggy Dooz DVD is available online or for stockist's visit www.doggydooz.com.au.
